Does the holiday season feel less like joy and more like a marathon you didn't sign up for? You're definitely not alone. While the holidays are meant to be a time of celebration and connection, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed by the endless obligations, financial pressures, and perfectionist expectations that seem to multiply during this time of year.
As a mental health professional, I see firsthand how holiday stress affects people—whether it's the busy shopping season creating work pressure, increased client needs due to seasonal stress, or the juggling act of managing countless social obligations while keeping daily life running smoothly.
Understanding what's really driving your stress is the first step to managing it effectively. Here are five common but often overlooked sources of holiday stress:
Many of us fall into the trap of believing everything must be "just so" for the holidays to be meaningful. We convince ourselves that decorations must be perfect, meals must be elaborate, and every detail must be flawless—or the entire celebration will be ruined.
This perfectionist mindset creates unnecessary pressure. We go above and beyond because we want the holidays to be memorable and enjoyable, but ironically, our pursuit of perfection often steals our joy in the process.
Holiday celebrations often come with the expectation of increased spending. From special holiday foods (that turkey or prime rib doesn't come cheap!) to gift-giving obligations, the financial cost can create significant stress.
We tell ourselves we "have to" buy certain foods or give specific gifts, but it's important to ask: at what cost to our mental health and stress levels?
Not everyone has close family connections or positive holiday associations. Some people are spending their first holiday without someone important, while others simply don't have a support network to celebrate with.
This loneliness can make the holiday season particularly difficult, especially when surrounded by messages about togetherness and family joy.
We're creatures of habit who thrive on routine, but holidays are major disruptors to our normal patterns. Whether it's changing work schedules, taking time off, or adapting to family visiting schedules, these disruptions can create stress even when the activities themselves are positive.
How many holiday parties, family gatherings, and social events get packed into a few short weeks? The pressure to attend every event you're invited to can quickly become overwhelming, leaving little time for rest and self-care.
Stress isn't just mental—it shows up physically in ways that can impact your entire well-being:
Headaches and tension: Constantly hunched shoulders from stress can lead to persistent headaches
Fatigue and exhaustion: Juggling multiple obligations drains your energy reserves
Weakened immune system: High stress levels make you more susceptible to seasonal illnesses
Sleep disruption: Racing thoughts about holiday to-dos can interfere with restful sleep
If we don't address holiday stress proactively, it can lead to more serious issues:
Burnout that extends well beyond the holiday season
Increased anxiety and depression
Physical health problems
Relationship strain
These consequences often sneak up gradually—you might not notice them building until they become overwhelming.
One of the most effective techniques I share with clients is this simple breathing exercise:
The 3-Breath Reset:
Pause whatever you're doing
Take 3 intentional deep breaths
Breathe in through your nose, exhale through your mouth
With each exhale, consciously relax your shoulders down
Build this into routine moments—while cooking, driving, or transitioning between activities
This simple practice can be done anywhere and helps reset your nervous system in moments of stress.
Over the years, I've learned to embrace a "less is more" approach to the holidays. It's okay to change traditions that no longer serve you, even if you've maintained them for decades. People often discover that simpler celebrations are actually more enjoyable because there's less stress involved.
Focus your energy on the parts that truly matter to you and your loved ones, and give yourself permission to let go of the rest.
Remember, you don't have to do everything or please everyone during the holiday season. It's possible to enjoy the holidays without sacrificing your mental health and well-being.
The key is recognizing your stress sources, implementing simple grounding practices, and making conscious choices about where to invest your time and energy.
What stresses you out most during the holidays? Identifying your specific triggers is the first step toward a more peaceful and joyful season.
