Last week we talked about why burnout can make you question a career you once loved. But what if the problem isn't that you've lost your calling? What if you've lost your connection to it?
That distinction changes everything. So if you've been asking yourself, how do I feel connected to my purpose again, stick with me, because that's exactly what we're walking through today.
What Losing Connection Actually Feels Like
You probably already recognize some of this. Day to day feels like going through the motions. You're not really intentional about what you're doing, just on autopilot. Work starts to feel like an obligation, something you have to do, not something you get to do. The excitement is gone. And maybe you've said the sentence I hear constantly, I don't feel like myself anymore.
I want you to really sit with the questions we're about to walk through, because they're designed to give you clarity on one of two things. I want to reconnect to my purpose, or I need to find my purpose. This is what I call the calling check.

The Calling Check, 5 Questions
1. What are my values? These are the things that genuinely matter to you. For me, one value is helping people and seeing them thrive. Another is honesty, which can be hard in healthcare when leadership isn't transparent. Your purpose connects directly to your values, so reconnecting starts here.
2. What are my strengths? What are you naturally good at? Maybe it's understanding what someone is going through and helping them see a clear path forward. We can build strengths, but we can't force them. Reconnect to what's actually natural for you.
3. Where do I feel useful? (Contributions) I hear this constantly from people recovering from burnout. I don't think what I'm doing matters anymore. There's just no point. That feeling often comes from losing touch with contribution, not from losing the ability to contribute. Take real time with this question.
4. What gives me energy versus what drains it? In healthcare, and this is still true for me, I get energy from talking with people and helping them find answers within themselves. Paperwork just drains it. Plenty of people in healthcare genuinely thrive on the paperwork side, and we need all of us. The point isn't which answer is right. It's knowing your own answer.
5. What has changed between who I am and how I'm working? (Alignment) This is the final step. And here's something important. It's okay if who you are has genuinely changed in a way that points toward a different calling. That happens for people. The goal of this question isn't to force you back to where you started. It's honesty.
Purpose Isn't Purely Occupational
As you answer these questions honestly, you reconnect with yourself, and for many of us, with what we believe spiritually. Purpose isn't purely about your job title. Sometimes God places us in an occupation to serve our purpose, and that's beautiful when it happens. But purpose can be bigger than the occupation itself. It has meaning behind it. There's a reason you're doing it and an outcome you're working toward, and it aligns with your values so you're not living misaligned.
For a lot of people, purpose comes from identity, from who you believe you are and who you believe you were created to be. Without that spiritual connection and spiritual health, people tend to flounder, and it affects relationships too. When you stay connected to what you believe your purpose is, you work from a place where your physical and mental health can actually thrive, because you're taking care of yourself in order to do the work, not sacrificing yourself to do it.
Calling Without Capacity Becomes a Burden
Here's the truth I want you to hold onto. Calling, without the capacity to do the calling eventually feels like a burden, and none of us want that. We want the capacity to actually live out our calling, and sometimes that just means working a little differently while staying aligned with who you truly are.
I worked with a medical leader managing multiple locations who kept saying yes, taking on responsibility because someone had to pick it up. It led to constant travel, skipped meals, and disconnection from her family. As we walked through the Sustainable Performance Method™ together, she realized something important. She hadn't stopped caring. She simply didn't have enough of herself left to experience what she truly cared about, her family. Once she got realigned, learned to set boundaries, learned to trust herself, and honestly assess her own capacity, everything changed.
Where to Start
Pick just one of these to focus on this week. Is there a part of your work you still genuinely value? Is there one strength you're no longer using, even though you're pouring effort elsewhere? Is there one responsibility draining more energy than it should? Is there one part of yourself you've neglected? I neglected my physical health during my own burnout, which is exactly why I had health issues to restore afterward. Pick one question and start there.
If you're trying to get your passion for your purpose back but feel like nothing you've tried is working, start with the Burnout to Balance Accelerator program. It's designed to give you quick relief first, so you have the space and capacity to actually reconnect with your purpose.
