Burnout Self Care

If you've been trying to fix your burnout with bubble baths and weekend getaways, you're not alone, and you've probably noticed they're not working. These self-care activities feel good in the moment, but the relief doesn't last. By Monday morning, you're right back where you started: exhausted, overwhelmed, and running on empty.
Here's the truth: bubble baths and vacations are important, but they're not the solution to burnout. They're Band-Aids on a deeper wound.
Self-care focuses on your daily physical and mental needs. It includes activities like:
Taking bubble baths
Reading for pleasure
Working out
Getting your hair cut
Taking vacations
These activities are designed to help you decompress and relieve daily stress. They're necessary for maintaining your well-being, but they don't address the root cause of burnout.
Soul care, on the other hand, goes deeper. Soul care activities fill you up at the core of your being. These are the things that energize you, make you feel alive, and reconnect you with who you really are. While you might not do them weekly, when you do engage in them, you feel genuinely happy, relaxed, and restored.
When you're burnt out, your exhaustion isn't just physical or mental, it's spiritual and emotional too. You've been giving and giving until there's nothing left. Self-care helps you blow off steam, but it doesn't refill your tank at the deepest level.
That's why you can take a vacation and still feel exhausted when you return. The activities provided temporary relief, but they didn't address what's depleting you in the first place.
Real burnout recovery requires a three-part approach:
1. Daily Self-Care Continue your bubble baths, workouts, and leisure reading. Your mind and body need these practices to manage daily stress and maintain basic well-being.
2. Recovery Techniques Throughout Your Day This is where real change happens. Develop skills that help you:
Pause before responding to requests or challenges
Create mental breaks between tasks so you can shift focus with a clear mind
Build in moments for your brain to reset and refocus efficiently
Set and maintain boundaries around your time and energy
3. Soul Care Activities Identify and prioritize activities that fill you up at your core. These might be things you've set aside because you're "too busy," but they're essential for true recovery.
Here's a reality you need to accept: there will always be more work to do. The to-do list never ends. There will always be more chores, more emails, more people wanting your attention.
The key to recovery isn't doing it all, it's determining what's truly important to you during this season of your life and setting boundaries around it. When you focus on your real priorities, it becomes easier to let go of everything else.
If you're ready to move beyond temporary fixes and create lasting recovery from burnout, start by asking yourself:
What activities truly fill me up at my core?
What skills do I need to develop to manage my stress response in the moment?
What boundaries do I need to set to protect my priorities?
Remember: recovery is possible, even with a packed schedule. It's not about adding more to your plate, it's about making strategic choices that support your well-being at the deepest level.
