You can color-code your calendar within an inch of its life and still burn out, because time was never the real problem.
Most leaders protect their calendar like it's sacred ground. Double-booked? Unthinkable. But ask that same leader how their energy reserves are doing, and you'll usually get a shrug. Here's the truth: your energy, not your time, is your most valuable resource as a leader; and ignoring that is a fast track to high-achiever burnout.

I learned this the hard way. In my career, I left a community-based role for a structured hospital setting, fully convinced the change would fix my workplace stress. It didn't. What I walked into instead was one crisis after another: short-staffed teams, constant operational pressure, and leadership (me included) sprinting from fire to fire. I was showing up every single day. But an exhausted leader can't actually solve anything. That's when it clicked: burnout isn't just a personal problem. It's an organizational one. And as a leader, you have to address both.
Energy shows up in four areas, and long term stress chips away at all of them:
Physical: movement, nourishment, sleep, and hormone balance, because chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, and your body simply can't function well under that load
Emotional: your capacity to stay steady, empathetic, and even-keeled instead of irritable
Mental: clear thinking and decision-making capacity
Spiritual: your sense of purpose and what you're connected to at your core
These aren't separate boxes to check. They're deeply intertwined, which is part of why I built out 7 dimensions of wellness instead of the more common 8, some simply can't be addressed in isolation.
Here's where most leaders lose energy without realizing it: constant accessibility. Open-door policies, nonstop interruptions, jumping from task to task every few minutes, every context switch costs you something. In poor boundaries the perfectionist’s instinct is to own everything, and you've got a recipe for burnout recovery becoming a constant, exhausting necessity instead of a one-time fix. And let's be honest, we often blame others for crossing boundaries we never actually held,
The fix isn't willpower. It's a system. Sustainable leaders build sustainable performance systems, predictable structures that don't require you to white-knuckle your way through every day. This is exactly what my SPARK Framework™ is built for: see the problem, pinpoint the root, activate small changes, and reinforce the habit for long-term momentum.
Sustainable performance isn't about doing more. It's about building the systems that let you keep showing up for work you love, without sacrificing yourself to do it.
