The Identity Loss That Happens During Burnout

The Identity Loss That Happens During Burnout (Why "I Don't Feel Like Myself" Is More Common Than You Think)

Have you ever caught yourself saying, "I don't feel like myself anymore?" I used to enjoy this. I don't know what's wrong with me?

What if nothing is wrong with you? What if burnout isn't just draining your energy, but disconnecting you from your identity? This is one of the least talked about symptoms of burnout, and I call it the identity drain cycle™. It happens when performance slowly replaces personhood, and the longer we operate in survival mode, the harder it becomes to remember who we are outside of our responsibilities.

My Own Turning Point

I've shared before how my third round of burnout physically affected me, and how it affected my thoughts and beliefs. The third part, the one that hit hardest, was that it changed how I saw myself. It changed my belief about who I was as a person. When we lose connection to our own identity, we flounder. We don't know what we need. We don't know the next step. It took a colleague telling me, “Deidre, it's okay to take a leave from work to find yourself again.”

At the time, my entire identity revolved around helping others. It wasn't until I started recovering that I realized my attachment to always being the yes person came from a fear of missing out, a fear of not being accepted. That's where it struck at my identity, because that was never where my identity was actually meant to live. On the outside, life looked successful. I was in a leadership role. I was doing clinical work as a licensed therapist. I was meeting or exceeding expectations constantly. Internally, I was barely functioning, disconnected from my own body and disconnected from the meaning behind what I was doing.

One day I recognized something that became my turning point. I know what I do, but I don't know who I am outside of work. That recognition taught me recovery isn't just about reducing stress. It's about reconnecting with yourself as a person, and with the people in your life who matter most.

Burnout Shrinks Your World

When I was deep in burnout, my world shrank down to work. Instead of seeing my whole life, my whole support system, all I could see was what was directly in front of me. But work is only one part of life. When I talk about the seven dimensions of wellness, I mean we are not just working people. We have families, social support, community, and so much more that makes up our world. Burnout convinces us work is everything, and that is when work starts to take over life instead of being one part of it.

Some of the first things to disappear are hobbies that genuinely fill your cup. Friendships and family relationships start to feel like too much effort, so we isolate. Creativity disappears, whether that's sewing, woodworking, building, or any hands on outlet you love. Curiosity and joy fade too, and we need both, because we cannot function well while staying in a negative and low mood all the time. When your hobby has been on pause for a week, when you start saying no to friends you always said yes to, when the small routines that ground you disappear, that is often where identity is quietly starting to get buried.

The Five Stages of the Identity Drain Cycle™

Stage one, achievement focus. You want recognition and growth, so you take on more responsibility.

Stage two, over identification. Your worth becomes tied to performance. The more you take on and get recognized for, the more you believe your worth lives there.

Stage three, overextension. Your boundaries weaken. I want to challenge something here, because I hear this often. Someone crossed my boundary. Fair, but did you allow it, or did you reinforce it? I was terrible at this myself. I gave in constantly instead of holding the line, which led directly into taking on more than I could realistically manage while staying healthy.

Stage four, burnout. You're emotionally, mentally, and often physically exhausted, and fully detached, running on autopilot, disconnected from purpose and from the people around you.

Stage five, identity loss. You feel disconnected, you're questioning yourself, and you can't access why you started this work in the first place.

If you recognize yourself across all five stages, please hear this. Burnout hasn't erased your identity. It has buried it.

Why High Performers Are Especially Vulnerable

High performers often believe their value comes from what they accomplish, and carry a belief that rest must be earned. High achievers are genuinely terrible at rest, because rest feels like doing nothing, when in reality it's doing something essential. Performance becomes the primary source of identity when it should never hold that role. This ties directly into the sustainable performance gap™. As performance stays high and capacity quietly disappears, identity hides right along with it, because there's no longer capacity to keep performing at that level and still stay connected to who you are.

Common signs of identity loss include a loss of passion, emotional numbness, reduced motivation, and a disconnection from your own values. I hear constantly, I don't know what my values are anymore, and that's okay. We can find them again, because values drive your decisions and your direction. Some of the most common phrases I hear are, I don't know what I enjoy anymore, I don't feel like myself, I don't know who I am outside of work, work is all I have, and I don't know what my purpose is. These experiences are far more common than most people realize, and we rarely talk about the identity disappearing underneath the exhaustion.

Finding Yourself Again

Reconnecting to identity means walking through the burnout to balance model™. Recognize what stage of burnout you're in and what's driving it. Recover, realign with your purpose and values, and build sustainability that maintains it long term. Through the SPARK method™, we first identify what's draining your identity, then pinpoint the root cause underneath it. For many people that's overwork or over identification with achievement. For me, it was a false belief that I was only worth something if I showed up, only connected if I kept showing up.

From there, we activate small, doable changes, never an overwhelming plan handed to you all at once, because that only adds more pressure to an already overloaded system. As recovery builds, we expand into healthier systems, new or reinforced boundaries, rebuilt relationships, and structures that help this last for the long term.

One of the cruelest things burnout does is convince you that you've lost yourself. In most cases, you haven't. You've simply been carrying so much stress for so long that you've become disconnected from the parts of you that matter most. If this resonates, take the Professional Burnout Assessment to identify your burnout risk, your capacity challenges, and where to begin your own recovery.
