One of the biggest burnout risks isn't hating your job. It's caring so much about your work that you stop noticing what it's costing you.
This is exactly what I help people with in the Sustainable Performance Method™, a way of learning to sustain meaningful work without sacrificing your health and your life. You shouldn't have to sacrifice anything just for the work you do. So if you're asking, how do I keep doing meaningful work without letting it consume me, that's what we're walking through today.

What This Looks Like Day to Day
It often shows up as, I have too much on my plate. Maybe you keep saying yes because people depend on you, and you're genuinely good at what you do. Maybe you don't want to disappoint anyone, and you truly believe the work matters, but saying no feels selfish. That one is huge for high performers and high achievers specifically. It's hard to say no because our identity gets wrapped up in the work we do, and saying no feels selfish, the same way rest feels unproductive and selfish. Neither one actually is.
If you're saying yes for these reasons, you are not alone. What matters is learning to distinguish this. Are you saying yes because it's connected to your purpose and it genuinely gives you energy, or has it become overcommitment? Your passion is the things that matter to you, the things you get excited about inside. Overcommitment happens when you keep giving more and saying yes simply because the thing matters, without checking whether you have the capacity to give it.
Contributing vs. Taking Responsibility for Everything
If you're contributing, you genuinely feel like what you're doing matters, and it helps the team or the person move forward. That is very different from feeling like you're responsible for everything. I see this constantly with leaders. They feel like they own everything their team does, so if the team isn't doing it, they pick it up themselves. I want to challenge that directly. That's not truly contributing. That's taking on ownership that leads straight into overcommitment.
Commitment vs. Self-Sacrifice
If you're committed, you show up, you do the work, you do it to the best of your ability, and you strive for excellence. It becomes self-sacrifice when you stay longer than necessary. If you usually need to leave at 5 o’clock because your kids have a sporting event or you need to get home and make dinner, your own body needs that dinner, but instead you stay three extra hours to get something done, you are now sacrificing yourself. You're not nourishing your body, not resting, and not giving focus to your family if they're a priority for you. Commitment cannot be allowed to slide into self-sacrifice.
Boundaries and the Guilt That Comes With Them
A lot of high achievers fall into - I feel guilty if I set boundaries. I understand that completely, because I used to feel that way too. But ask where that guilt is actually coming from. It's coming from the fact that you like to say yes, you want to help people, and your identity is attached to that. Healthy boundaries protect you as a person. They say, I want to help, but I don't have the capacity right now, and I have to take care of my body and myself in order to keep doing what I'm doing. The guilt comes from the fact that people want us to say yes. The truth is, people respect you when you set boundaries and hold them, because your identity is more than what you do at work.
Rest Is Not Weakness
We also fall into believing rest is weakness. Rest is not weakness. Rest supports your performance and your health. We have to think about rest differently, because the idea of I'll rest when this project is done doesn't hold up. That project will never truly be done, because the next one always shows up. Rest is an important part of life, and we cannot keep going without it.
Your Career Cannot Become Your Identity
High performers, you probably see your identity wrapped up in what you do. But your career and your purpose are part of your identity. They are not who God created you to be and what you're here to do. There's real purpose in your work, and you are also a person with relationships and hobbies, all of which are part of who you are. If you're a caring person, that's all of it. You have to reconnect to every part of yourself, not just the career, because a career will eventually destroy your health. Or it will take over life and leave you asking - I didn't really live, did I?
When every request, every supposed crisis, every expectation or perceived disappointment determines your decisions, someone else is effectively controlling your capacity. I want you to have the power to control your own capacity instead.
A Story That Illustrates This
I've had professionals repeatedly say, “they don't need me at this job, it doesn't matter if I stay.” I know that's what it feels like at the moment. That's a lack of energy and capacity, talking. That is not your purpose and who you are, talking. When you can finally recognize that being needed doesn't make you responsible for everything, things start to change. When you're saying yes because it aligns with your purpose, you stop saying yes out of guilt, responsibility, or fear of disappointing someone. It has to align, and people will respect you for it.
Once we can separate our purpose from overcommitment, we can start making decisions differently. This is exactly what we walk through in the Sustainable Performance Method™, protecting your capacity, setting healthy boundaries, and staying aligned with your values so you can reconnect to your purpose and thrive in every part of life.
